Right now, when the Live PTR pulls DNS data for the address allocations, it uses A records to associate IP addresses with DNS names. It would be useful to also have the ability to enter CNAMEs (which are DNS entries that are associated with A records, not an IP address) associated with IP address/DNS entries as well. But, since CNAMEs can move around with VMs is a virtual environment, it would be most useful to have them not be statically associated with a specific IP address/DNS name so that they can move around as necessary. CNAMEs can be queried and will display which A record they are associated with, but must be manually entered and cannot be queried without the knowledge of the original name (i.e. you cannot get all of the CNAMEs associated with a A record). |

Well, now I see. LivePTR, which works with PTR records, is only a quick and dirty helper component. There is no DNS infrastructure in RackTables now, which could accomodate the CNAME tracking you have described. I will leave this request open for a month, if noone volunteers to work on it, it will be closed. |
